Somar Adds Extra Insulation To Save More Energy

Despite already having substantial insulation throughout the loft space of Somar House, last week saw Somar International commission an extra layer of insulation in a bid to further drive down the company’s energy costs. Over 200m2 of 100mm thick loft insulation was professionally installed over a two-day period without any disruption to the company’s operations, enabling Somar to continue to help businesses reduce their energy costs and carbon footprints with its’ energy-saving technologies whilst minimising its’ own environmental impact.

Despite a levelling off of wholesale energy costs in recent months, electricity costs in the UK have continued to rise, meaning that the nation’s energy companies earn around £100 in profit from the average household. The UK energy industry is notorious for raising prices as soon as international markets charge more, but for reacting slowly to drop retail prices again in response to subsequent cheaper wholesale prices.

In order to mitigate the profiteering of energy companies and the effects of turbulent energy prices, more and more companies are looking to energy efficiency investments to help protect their profits and sustain them through the global downturn. According to a recent survey of 538 corporate executives by the Economist Intelligence Unit, 73% of businesses see energy efficiency as a high or medium priority over the next two years. 54% have a coherent climate change strategy, primarily focusing on energy efficiency measures, which 62% have already begun to implement to some degree. According to another survey by Kyocera Mita, 27% of firms are aiming to achieve carbon neutrality.

Thermal insulation is one of the most obvious and simple measures to take. If all non-domestic buildings were able to meet level C on their Energy Performance Certificates by 2022, they would save £450 million a year on their energy costs and reduce their carbon emissions by 0.36 million tonnes annually.

Another great place for businesses to make significant savings is through energy-efficient lighting. Lighting on a premises accounts for a significant part of most firms’ overall energy costs, and the installation of more efficient lighting systems such as Somar’s intelligent Eluma lighting system. Eluma can save companies around 80% of their lighting bills, as well as reducing the associated carbon footprint, whilst providing better quality light to the working environment and reducing maintenance costs.
