Europe Outlaws Inefficient Lighting

In a busy week for EU environmental legislators after their announcement of minimum efficiency standards for electric motors, the European Commission has formally adopted regulations to improve the energy efficiency of household, commercial, industrial and roadside lighting. The expansive framework aims to have saved up to 80TWh by 2020 - that’s equivalent to the entire electricity consumption of Belgium.

Inefficient incandescent lighting will be replaced over a period of three years from now, which is expected to save the economies of Europe around €12 billion every year. As well as targeting the sitting duck of household lighting, the legislation goes further and sets strict targets and standards for the fluorescent and high-intensity discharge lamps found in offices, warehouses and industrial units, as well as related ballasts and luminaires. The removal of 20th-century lighting technologies takes into account concerns surrounding aesthetics, functionality and health and safety.

Whilst the 3-year time frame allows breathing space for manufacturers to develop supplies of lighting which fulfils the obligations of the new laws, some companies already offer products which massively exceed the energy-saving requirements laid down by the EU. Somar International’s intelligent energy-saving Eluma luminaire offers companies to save up to 80% off their existing lighting costs, making a huge dent in the companies’ carbon footprint whilst offering superior quality light and lower maintenance costs. Recently covered by the BBC news service, Somar’s energy-saving products are already helping companies across the globe defend their profits whilst cutting carbon emissions.
