Winning Ticket For ‘Green’ Energy Savings

Cutting company energy bills and enhancing environmental credentials is no lottery!

That’s the experience of specialist printers Stralfors – the company tasked with supplying Camelot’s 35 million National Lottery tickets each month – which has slashed its electricity consumption and Carbon Footprint after identifying an advanced eco-lighting system.

Last September, Stralfors’ replaced almost 100 metal halide and fluorescent lamps in its Redruth premises with 67 high-tech Eluma lights. And, a year on, they’ve recorded an impressive 73 per cent saving on its lighting costs whilst also saving 57.7 tonnes of carbon output.

Rob Norwell, Stralfors’ Quality and Environment Manager, said: “The figures are striking. The amount of energy we’ve saved is equivalent to the weekly electricity used by around 1,500 households.

“Many businesses are still sceptical about ‘green’ technologies: they’re concerned it will be costly to become more eco-friendly or don’t want to be accused of tokenism by adopting something that makes very little difference to the environment.

“But these results go to show there are technologies available that can make a significant impact.

Such energy savings are possible as a result of Eluma’s special reflector, which boasts 95 per cent reflectance, and its intelligent sensor system that dims or switches off lights when areas are unoccupied and also decreases output according to natural light levels.

And Stralfors’ eco efforts were rewarded when they won the Environment Award at this year’s British Printing Industries Federation Excellence Awards.

In addition to installing Eluma lighting, the company – which also print Lottery and gaming site winners’ cheques – impressed award judges with other initiatives such as a rainwater collection system that saves the firm 40,000 litres a year, plus soundproofing and waste sorting schemes.

Mr Norwell, added: “We’re looking to invest the money saved from our Eluma lights – which is expected to be around £12,000 per year – into other environmental projects.”

And as Somar’s Eluma lights feature on DEFRA’s Energy Technology Product List, Stralfors were also able to make a 30 per cent Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) claim against the cost of the lamps.

David Bone, Managing Director at Eluma manufacturer Somar, added: “It’s great that companies such as Stralfors take their social responsibilities very seriously and are continually researching new, proven green technologies.”
