Energy Efficiency: Seeing the Light!

A high-tech lighting system is helping warehouse and logistics bosses tackle the economic slowdown and cut their carbon footprint.
The energy efficient ‘Eluma’ lamps, manufactured by Somar International, afford energy savings of anything up to 80 per cent when compared to traditional high-ceiling lamps.
Several forward-thinking companies have already switched to the Carbon Trust-backed technology – and some are reporting annual six-figure savings!
Sainsbury’s recently installed 500 Eluma lights into a bonded warehouse in Corby. It’s estimated they will save the company £105,000 a year in lighting bills, whilst reducing its carbon output by 680 tonnes.
And catering supplier 3663 has also seen the light after placing 150 Eluma lamps in a Plymouth depot.
David Bone, MD at Somar International, said: “In warehouses, lighting can account for a massive 60 per cent of a company’s energy usage. And all too often, conventional lights are burning 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in unmanned storage areas.”
Such savings are possible thanks to Eluma’s special reflector, which boasts 95 per cent reflectance, and its ‘intelligent’ sensor system that dims or switches off lights when areas are unoccupied and also decreases output according to natural light levels. Also, an Eluma light’s connected load when operating at full power is just 230W, compared to 480W with traditional metal halide and high pressure sodium.
